Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some answers to our most frequently asked questions.  If you can't find the answer to your question here, please feel free to Contact Us.

Q: What is an Ashram?

A: An Ashram is a spiritual community that forms around a particular body of teachings and provides a space of solitude for individuals to deepen their spiritual practice and Self-inquiry.

Anuttara Ashram is primarily of the Saccha lineage.  However, we do give teaching and ceremonies of the traditional tantric teachings of India from Guruji Raj Kumar. Our meditation and retreats are based on Sahajananda’s Hridaya methods for the Revealing of the Spiritual Heart. We base our yoga practice and esoteric knowledge on the tantric teachings of Agama Yoga.

Q:  I already am having my own practises of Yoga and/ or meditation.  Is it okay if I practise my own form of spirituality?

A:  We are not sectarian-- we have our practises of meditation and yoga that we have learned and that we share to those who come to visit us and stay with us.  If you have your own practises of meditation or yoga, by all means you are very welcome to practise them.

Q:  I am coming as a volunteer, what should I bring with me?

A:  As a volunteer you will need to bring:  work clothes; bedding and blankets or sleeping bag; pillow; flashlight or headlamp; extra batteries (for your flashlight); work boots/ shoes (if coming in the autumn-- rubber boots, and in the winter-- winter boots); and enthusiasm.  Good walking shoes / boots, sunscreen and natural bug spray, flashlight, towel, swim suit, layers of clothing for all conditions, camera, journal, book, earplugs and sleeping eye mask, water bottle.

Q:  I am coming as a retreat participant, and/ or a guest, what items should I bring with me?

A:  As a retreat participant or a guest you will need to bring a flashlight and rubber boots (if coming in the autumn).  For meditation you might want to bring your own meditaiton mat and blanket, and for yoga your own yoga mat.  This is optional-- we have lots of pillows and blankets and yoga mats for eveyone! Good walking shoes / boots, sunscreen and natural bug spray, flashlight, towel, swim suit, layers of clothing for all conditions, camera, journal, book, earplugs and sleeping eye mask, water bottle.

Q: Do I need to be an experienced Yogi to come stay?

A: Anuttara Ashram is open to all individuals.  The meditation and yoga practices are optional and are by no means a mandatory part of your stay.  Each of our guests are welcome to take part in as much or as little as they feel comfortable with.  We are always open and available to discuss our practices with those who are interested.

Q: I don't have personal transportation.  What are my options?

A: There are flights and buses into Terrace BC on the regular.  We make trips into town aproximately once a week during spring, summer and fall and would be happy to arrange to pick you up.  However, be sure to organize this with us before hand as our trips into town can take quite a lot of planning.  Please Contact Us if you are in need of organizing a ride.

Q: What is off-grid? Is there wifi?

A: The term off-grid refers to living in a self-sufficient manner.  This means that our facilities do not rely on municipal water supply, sewage systems, natural gas, hyrdro, or any other similar utility services.  We are working towards being a completely self-sufficient community.

HOWEVER, we do have wifi which is turned on, on occasion and the generator is needed in order to get 'on the line'.
