Dāna (दान) is a Sanskrit and Pali word, the literal meaning of this word is generosity; giving; gift; or heart-full giving. It is connected in meaning to the Latin word donum the root word of donation.
In Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism, dāna is the practice of cultivating generosity. It can take the form of giving to an individual in distress or need. It can also take the form of donation to projects that empower and help many.
