What is Vedic Astrology /  Jyotish?

Jyotish is the oldest system of astrology in the world. It's derived from the  Sanskrit word  "jyoti"  which means light.  Therefore, Jyotish could be translated as 'the science of light'.

In Jyotish, it is understood that all of the light which shines to illumine this world before us shines and is directed from within. We are that Shankara who is the source of the power of the wheel of all energies. Through studying, and finding devotion for this light within we begin to praise the highest expression of our own selves.

As the pure light of scientific knowledge, the word Jyotish implies studying a person's character,  health,  habits and even their future on the basis of his or her birth chart.

The awareness about Jyotish can be traced back to the Vedic civilization in northern India.   Jyotish can be referenced in centuries-old manuscripts and translations.

Difference between Jyotish and WEstern Astrology?

Jyotish is distinctly different from Western astrology for many reasons. The most significant reason is that Jyotish is based on the fixed, observable positions of the constellations, as we see them in the sky. Western astrology is based on the relative and changeable position of the sun.

Because of a wobble in the axial spin of the Earth, the western astrological positions have slowly moved away from the fixed, constellations. Therefore the Western astrology chart, have moved away from the fixed, observable positions by about 24 degrees. In short, there is a difference between these two astrological systems by that many degrees.

Jyotish, does not think of people in terms of their sun sign. Instead, Jyotish looks at the “ascendant,” the constellation that is rising at the time of a one's birth. This sets up the relationship between the planets at the time of birth to the event of the birth and gives clues about an individual’s personality, physical body, and the way the person presents themselves to the world.
